Dr. Don Spencer serves as vice president and chief medical informatics officer for the UNC Health Care System. In this role, he has responsibility for medical informatics throughout the enterprise. Spencer also serves as professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).

A family physician for 39 years and 23-year veteran of UNC Health Care and the UNC School of Medicine, Spencer previously served as program manager for the Carolina Data Warehouse for Health and Medical Director and vice president of ambulatory care for UNC Health Care. There, he was instrumental in developing physician champions who become influential in information technology (IT) governance. Before these IT roles, Spencer was in private practice in rural North Carolina. He then joined the University of Missouri-Columbia Department of Family and Community Medicine, where he established office information systems in three rural practice sites and was responsible for practice management curriculum development in the family medicine residency.

Spencer holds a bachelor of science in biology from Stanford University, a medical degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a master of business administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia, in addition to a certificate in biomedical informatics from Oregon Health and Science University. His areas of interest include medical practice management and information sciences.
