Continuity of Care After Hurricane Helene

NC HIEA Helps Providers Access Clinical Portal for Continuity of Care After Hurricane Helene

Author: Jessica Hagins

The NC HealthConnex Clinical Portal is helping providers access critical clinical information such as medical history, medications and treatment plans for patients in North Carolina displaced by Hurricane Helene.

Shortly after the storm, NC HIEA staff mobilized to implement a plan to expedite participation agreements from organizations in the hardest hit areas. This access is essential to assist organizations affected by lack of access to their regular facilities in providing continuity of care to their patients or to patients coming from affected communities.

Thanks to these efforts, 92 new accounts have been added to give providers in the affected counties immediate access to the NC HealthConnex Clinical Portal so far.

Providers were notified by email and on the NC HIEA website and given instruction on the proper steps to take to request credentials. Training materials were shared to guide providers in the use of the Clinical Portal.

Health care providers with a signed and executed Full Participation Agreement have the ability to use value-added services, such as the NC HealthConnex Clinical Portal, immediately and at no cost.

Through our agreement with the eHealth Exchange, patient records are also available in bordering states, such as Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia.

The NC HIEA is committed to continuing support for those providers in western North Carolina impacted by Hurricane Helene. If your organization has been affected and you need access to information on patients with whom you have a treatment relationship, contact the NC HIEA Provider Relations team via email at hiea@nc.gov or via phone at 919-754-6912.

Visit our Notices page for information on steps to gain access based on your current participation status.

The NC HIEA also worked with NC Medicaid to research approximately 5,000 individual beneficiaries in need of well checks in NC HealthConnex to see if they have had clinical encounters since the storm.
